Klondike Solitaire HQ

Hello and welcome to the headquarters for Klondike Solitaire!

You can play on your desktop, tablet, or mobile device completely for free.

Here you can also change up the rules however you'd like. The rule you're probably most interested in changing is whether you deal 3 cards or 1 card at a time out of the stock pile. You may also wish to change the traditional rule that says that only Kings can go in free tableau spaces. You can change this so that any card can go in any free space.

what you need to play

You'll need a single shuffled card deck. Of course, if you're playing online, this is already provided for you. You only need to bring your mouse-controlling hand or a finger to operate your touch device. Easy peasy.

the game layout

There are roughly 13 piles used in Klondike Solitaire. 7 piles are for the tableau spaces. This is basically the main playing area. Then there are 4 piles for the foundations. This is your ultimate destination for your playing cards. Then there are 2 piles for the stock and the waste/discard pile.

how to win

Get all of your cards to the foundation piles to win the game. Cards in these piles are in ascending order going from Ace, 2, 3, etc to the King card and are by suit (example: only diamonds are allowed in one pile).

solitaire rules

The valid moves in this game depend on which pile you're talking about.

tableau moves

Cards are ordered by descending (from King down to 2) and by alternating color. You may create a sequence as long as you like and you are allowed to move that entire stack of cards whenever there is a valid move available.

If you free a space on the tableau, depending on your specific rules, you can move only King cards or you may move any card (remember to change the rules settings on this site to whichever rules you prefer to play with).

foundation moves

Cards are ordered ascending (starting Ace, 2, 3, … King) and by same suit. When you complete all 4 foundation piles, you win the game.

stock moves

This depends on your rules, but you'll either deal one card or three at a time from the stock pile. Also depending on your rules, you may either cycle through the stock pile as many times as you like or a limited amount of times.

moving between piles

You may move cards from the stock pile to the foundation or tableau piles if it is a legal move. You may move cards from the tableau to the foundations and back again if you wish (some rules don't allow moves from the foundations to the tableau, but we find that allowing this move can really help out in a jam).

undos

Undos are the bread and butter of playing on a computer (keeping track when you're playing by hand is so much more complicated). Here, you can use as many undos as you like with no penalty, so feel free to explore whatever options you have and find the best move.
